Christmas came early this year :)

Yesterday was my lucky day. 

We set out in the morning to finish our Christmas shopping and went to the the local Iittala store here in Oulu. While we were browsing around the store we noticed that they were changing various displays, including Tove's Jubilee mugs. I didn't think anything of it at the time, because displays get moved all the time to showcase different items and collections. 

As we made our way to the check out counter, we were shocked to see eight brand new special edition mugs glasses mugs sitting next to it. Obviously noticing our shock, the cashier informed us that they were in fact for sale with a limit of one per customer. Apparently they had unpacked the remaining boxes and as you know, every sixth one is the limited edition version. Well, needless to say, we purchased our new mugs along with the rest of our gifts. 

I am quite sure that the rest of the mugs did not sit on display for long and there were many smiling faces leaving the store that day. It was nice to see that customers had a chance to purchase the mugs with recent rumours of store workers always nabbing the special edition mugs before they even make it on display.

2015 Moominhouse Mug sneak peak!

Here is a sneak peak at next year's new Moomin mug. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Moomin the Moominhouse mug will be available starting the 3rd week of 2015. 

The new Moomin mug will come with cardboard roof so you can build your very own Moominhouse. It is a very nice looking mug and I will definitely be adding one to my collection.

Fillyjonk (Swedish: Filifjonkan, Finnish: Vilijonkka)

Mrs. Fillyjonk lives with her three children in Moominvalley. She is always worried about her kids learning bad habits and wants them to obey rules to the letter. Order and strict principles are very important to her. Her home is always in order, clean and very tidy.

Price guide update!

The Moomin Mugs Price Guide (link) has been updated. There were a few changes in mug value and a new addition, but for the most part, the prices stayed the same from earlier this year. 

If you use the price guide, I would love to hear your thoughts. Any price adjustments are also welcome, just leave a comment.

Sniff

Sniff (Swedish: Sniff, Finnish: Nipsu)

Sniff is one of the first characters introduced in the Moomin series. Son of the Muddler and the Fuzzy, Sniff is one of Moomintroll’s good friends. He is immature and is interested in money. Sniff is always on the lookout for a scheme to get rich quickly.

Sniff’s species is unknown. He resembles a brown mouse or rat. He would become Moomintroll’s adopted brother later in the series.

Sniff is the sole character on two different Arabia Moomin mugs.

Winter Mug 2014 has arrived!

The winter seasonal mug from Arabia has finally hit store shelves here in Finland. The mug is called Skiing with Mr Brisk. You can see many of the Moomin characters trying their luck at skiing, some fairing better than others :) The mug bears some similarities with a old seasonal mug from years past.

Little My

Little My (Swedish: Lilla My, Finnish: Pikku Myy) 

Little My is a little firecracker. She is small, fierce, determined and very independent. When she wants something done, she does is right away. Even though she can be aggressive and disrespectful, she is still a good friend. Little My is the daughter of Mymble and Snufkin’s half-sister. The Moomin family eventually adopts her.

Snorkmaiden

Snorkmaiden (Swedish: Snorkfröken, Finnish: Niiskuneiti) 

Snorkmaiden is Moomintroll’s lady friend and Snork’s sister. She is happy and energetic. A daydreamer, she will from time to time fall in love with others, but always returns to Moomintroll in the end. She has also been described as flirtatious and very resourceful.

Snorks as a species differ slightly from the Moomins. Instead of being white, they change colour according to their mood. When upset, Snorkmaiden turns light green. Snorkmadien always has her blonde hair combed and is seldom seen without her golden anklet.

The most expensive Moomin mug is....

... the 2004 limited edition Fazer special mug 

Only 400 numbered mugs were made in this extremely limited edition production run. The mug contains a Fazer advertisement published in the Garm magazine in 1951. The mugs are numbered on the bottom. Consider yourself very lucky if you are the owner of one of these special mugs.

Since 2004 the mugs have slowly increased in value to an astonishing 2500 euros just a few years ago. As I embarked on creating this blog I researched the various values of all the Moomin mugs so potential buyers would have a quick reference to see what the current price points are. I was shocked to see that a Fazer special mug has sold recently for 5000 euros on huuto.net (Finnish auction site).

As more and more individuals begin their Moomin mug collections, the demand for these rare mugs will only go up. Who would have thought the Fazer special mug at 2500 euros just a few years ago would have been such a great bargain :)

Moominmamma

Moominmamma (Swedish: Muminmamman, Finnish: Muumimamma)

She is the calm mother of Moomintroll and better half of Moominpappa. Moominmamma takes care of the Moominhouse and wants everyone to be happy. She is usually called upon to settle things when someone is wronged. Her handbag is always with her on a journey.

New Mug Valley addition!

Sailing with Nibling and Too Ticky

Moominpappa

Moominpappa (Swedish: Muminpappan, Finnish: Muumipappa) 

The father of the family, Moominpappa was orphaned in his younger years. He is always wearing his trademark black top hat, which has painted on the inside “M.P from your M.M”
